Basically Music Videos – ‘Cold’

This isn’t the official music video for Kanye West’s ‘Cold’ featuring DJ Khaled [Theraflu] but it might as well be. I realize that ‘Yezy is a wee bit too much of a media whore for such a thing to happen. But at this point the music video is already popular enough (a testament to its creativity and social media marketing) so he should just go with it. I doubt he will. It actually almost seems like one of Kanye’s weird ass music videos, it just doesn’t have him in it – which I’m guessing is a big no-no as far as he’s concerned. As far as I’m concerned, it looked like it was made for nothing, it turned out great, and its been watched by a whole slew of people (1.5 million and counting). So let’s get to this thing.

As far as I can tell, Ashley Smith aka Ash_Inovator only needed to spend money on a few Halloween masks and that’s about it. It’s quite possible that if this was shot off-season then she may have gotten a pretty good discount on those masks. Cha-ching. The star of the show is the little kid. That lil’ sumbitch got some charisma I’ll tell you what. The double hit of having the little kid sing Kanye lyrics while walking around with a tall blonde model just totally worked. Little kids are intenet gold, but seeing this little kid fill in for K.West was internet genius. The blonde model has a lot less energy but I don’t think she really needed to have any. She’s just supposed to be vapid arm candy which does a pretty good job of. She seemed to be fine with someone filming her butt, I guess that can be seen as a performance plus. Actually, some of her dance moves aren’t all that bad, so there’s that. I totally dig the random people in masks losing their shit. It just about seems like the type of things you’d see in a real life ‘Yezy music video.

The editing was pretty effective. Quick shots where it needed it and slow motion where it fit. It’s not revolutionary or groundbreaking but it fit the piece and meant that the editor made some choices which is usually a good idea. Shot choices were pretty decent. Some nice angles and hot close-ups. Again, not super crazy but also not first time amateur status.  She either chose a nice overcast day or just shot at a good time of day, I’ll go with the former (I’m probably wrong).  The footage has nice even lighting that makes everything look favorable. Ash_Inovator did a good job of using the available light and the red coming off the building gave her a nice contrast to the steady stream of blue in the rest of the video.

The lesson here is that if you want to make a splash.  Take a song from a famous musician that has a good beat and doesn’t have a music video yet and then add an awesome version of some of the internet’s favorite stuff.  Then blow the right people so they’ll get it out there (just kidding).
